SACA Artists accepting Commissions

Southern Arizona Clay Artists is a group of  clay artists who work in stoneware, porcelain and other clays, creating functional and decorative work.  The artists on this page are open to accepting commissions, which are custom pieces created to your specifications.

Custom clay pieces are a wonderful way to buy local and support artists in our community while creating something unique for yourself or a gift for someone else.  Commissioned work is the perfect, one-of-a-kind gift to celebrate an anniversary or birthday, welcome someone to a new home, provide favors for a wedding or a memorable wedding gift, commemorate an important life event like a graduation or promotion or to add a touch of handmade whimsy and elegance to a home or garden.

Q: What can you commission?

A: Clay is a versatile medium.  It can be functional, like tableware, vases or lamps, or decorative, in the form of garden décor, wall art or sculptures.  With commissioned work, you can select the colors and shapes you want – like an extra large popcorn bowl with your dad’s initials on it, made in his favorite shade of blue – or a vase for your mom, decorated with the sunflowers she loves.  You could commission sophisticated table decorations for a wedding or a set of beer mugs with images of javelinas on them for your favorite twenty-something nephew.  Use an app like Pinterest for inspiration to share with your commission request, but please understand that SACA artists will not directly copy the work of other artists.

Q:  How does this work?

A:  Use the form below to describe what you want to commission in as much detail as you can. You can even attach photos or drawings.  Please remember to include the date when you’ll need the commissioned piece to be completed.  Browse the work of SACA artists on the commission page and select any artists with work you like.  Or, you can issue a general commission.  That way, all of the artists on the page accepting commissions will be contacted.  Artists who are interested in your request will respond directly to you.  From there, the concepts, design, price and other details will be worked out between you and the artist.  SACA is not involved in nor takes any responsibility for the commission process or arrangements made between you and the artist.

Q:  What does this cost?

A:  Many times, the cost of a commissioned piece is less than something you would buy in a store.  The artist will do their best to accommodate your price range.   Remember, this piece will be distinctive and exceptional, created just for you.

Lisa Falk   Happily Becoming

My work is functional art--art you can use and enjoy every day. I do sgcraffito (carved) pieces of desert scenes, flowers, and cats, and glazed work often in a mix of blue shades, turquoise, and purples.

Abbe Gore   Art See

My pottery work is very diverse. I seem to work in cycles. From wheel thrown to hand built work. I change up themes and work through projects that inspire me. Recently I combined a dearly departed family member's ashes into various glazed and shared the finished work with multiple family members who wanted to have a piece of their loved one forever. I will gladly and respectfully do the same for you.

Leslie Hall. Temple Arts Collective

I was born in Tucson and spent most of my life in the Sonoran desert teaching art and making art.  Constantly challenging myself to experiment and explore ways to use clay and other media to express my vision of the world. I consider myself a multimedia artist. Monoprinting and other surface design techniques allow me to combine my passion for painting with my love of  creating functional and decorative three-dimensional works of art. I also collaborate with Jane Kroesen at our studio to make themed totems, personalized urns and other functional ware.

Melissa Henshaw Ceramics

My focus is on decorative yet functional ceramics, such as mugs, cups, and planters, and using unique surface designs and interesting ways to add color, pattern and texture to those pieces. In addition, I also create ornaments, small items like magnets and tiny trinket dishes (great for favors!), air plant holders and mosaic benches.

Horsehair vessels and pet cremation urns.

I am a ceramic artist specializing in various raku firing methods one of which is with horsehair. I create custom pieces to commemorate your faithful horse or favorite pet. In the process I burn strands of your horse’s or pet’s hair on the vessel’s surface for a very unique effect, and add the horse’s/pet’s name to the bottom of the piece. For the horse mementos I then wrap the remaining hair around the vessel’s neck and attach it with turquoise gems.

Connected Earth Clay Works
Sara Curtiss Westlund

I make sculptural and functional work. I am a potter. Some of my work is carved, and some of my work involves inlay of color. My work tends to be thin, and light. I decorate my surfaces with hand drawn images of desert life - predominantly the vegetation. I take commissions that request my style of work. I do enjoy working with clients to create what they are envisioning.
