About The Event
Ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of arranging flowers and natural materials into stylized forms, has been practiced for over 600 years. Ping Wei is an Ikebana Master who also creates ceramic vessels specifically for ikebana, known as hanaire. In this workshop, we will learn about the particular vessels used for different types of ikebana, the importance of wabi-sabi in Japanese ceramics, and make our own suiban (low-walled water basin) and nageire (tall vessel). There should even be time to create a third piece, such as a chabana vase used in tea ceremonies.
This workshop focuses on creating slab-built pieces, so please feel free to bring your favorite hand-building tools, and SACA will provide a half-bag of cone 5/6 clay.
This workshop is not appropriate for beginners.
